News from the barrels

In the lower part of the hold, the barrels have been better preserved than at the top. In addition to lids and staves, these include the wooden barrel tires. In the video showing a sequence of the diver from bow to stern, the exposed barrels on the starboard side can be seen together with the tires.

Barrel hoops made of iron, as they are often associated with wooden barrels today, are a fairly recent phenomenon that only emerged with industrialization. Previously, the use of wood such as hazel or ash was common, whose halved rods were wrapped several times around the barrel.
