Visiting the Nordisk Kalk Forum

Archaeologists from Lübeck visited the Nordisk Kalk Forum, which took place in Aalborg, Denmark, this year. The Forum is the annual meeting of Scandinavian lime and mortar experts from the fields of material analysis, museums, universities, conservation and the lime industry. In a keynote lecture, Lübeck archaeologist Felix Rösch presented the wreck and its cargo of barrels full of quicklime. He also had some material samples with him. The lecture was followed by numerous interesting discussions about the nature of quicklime and whether it could have caused the fire and thus the sinking of the ship. In addition, further analyses were agreed upon, which will hopefully finally reveal the secret of the origin of the quicklime.
